THE
LAKE
The
Lake Trasimeno, 128 square km - the fourth largest Italian lake,
attracts
a great multitude of birds. Surrounded by a level belt of land encircled
by gentle hills, where wood-lands alternate with fields of sunflowers
and maize, vineyards and stretches of olives, the local economy is,
in fact, mainly an agricultural one harmonising well with the inhabitants
propensity for craftwork: hence, the celebrated lace of the Isola
Maggiore, the pottery, the objects in copper and wrought iron. The
Etruscans, who were among the earliest inhabitants of the area,
carried out
the first attempt to harness the lake waters. In this feat, however,
the Romans were more successful than the Etruscans, and they built
the first outlet, later readapted by Braccio da Montone in 1420,
during the age of greatest splendour for Umbria and Tuscany.
This
region can offer, differently from the surrounding zones, all the environmental
wonders and the tourist attractions that only a lake of remarkable
size, such as the Trasimeno, can guarantee. The most important centers
of this region, such as Castiglione del Lago, Tuoro sul Trasimeno,
Passignano sul Trasimeno, and Magione, rise on its rivers. For those
who prefer to relax in the natural sourroundings, the beautiful excursions
between the woods and the mountains can be suggested. For botany enthusiasts,
this is paradise indeed. A revel of natural colours ranging from the
delicate yellow of the primrose to the bright hue of the waterlily,
from the vivid red of the cornel berry to the orangy tone of the lilium
bulbiferum. Trasimeno Lake means rural hollidays with all comfort and
relax garanteed.
