Chiusi,
was one of the most powerful cities in the Etruscan league, reaching
the
height of its importance during the lucumon reign of the famous King
Porsenna (6th Century B.C.) and still today it preserves
its Etruscan and Roman origins, which make it an important and extremely
famous archeological centre. There is a large number of Etruscan
tombs in the surrounding countryside.
Also
Chiusi itself is extremely interesting to visit (Etruscan Museum,
6th century
Chatedral, Chatedral
Museum, Etruscan necropolis, Catacombs) and special events are organized
(wine festival at the end of September and patronal feast in mid August).
The oldest part of the town spreads out over the top of a hill, in
a strategic position overlooking the Val di Chiana and the roads heading
into Umbria and Arezzo. A few
kilometres away on the southern borders of the Val di Chiana there
is the peaceful Lake of Chiusi, set amongst fields and reed thickets
and a popular destination for thousands of anglers and ornithologists.
In the surroundings Cetona (medieval village, pre-historical caves,
Franciscan sites), Chianciano (thermal waters, Spas), Montepulciano,
Pienza (charming small town with the most beautiful view of Southern
Tuscany), Montalcino (the town of "Brunello" wine).
Chiusi is strategically
located in the center of Italy. Within about one hour drive tourist
can visit
Orvieto, Todi, Perugia, Assisi, Cortona,
Arezzo, Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino. By train (station
at Chiusi) it takes a bit more than one hour to the center of Rome
and
to the center of Florence.
